What is the difference between Boolean and natural language legal search? Boolean legal search uses exact keywords joined by connectors like AND, OR, and proximity operators to return every document that matches the pattern. Natural language search lets you type a plain-English question and ranks results by relevance using language understanding. Boolean gives you precision and control; natural language gives you speed and forgiveness. The best research often combines both.

For decades, legal databases were built around terms-and-connectors queries, and learning the syntax was a rite of passage. Newer tools let you ask a question the way you would ask a colleague. Knowing when each shines, and where each fails, makes you faster no matter which platform you use.

How Boolean search works

A Boolean query is a logical pattern. You combine search terms with operators, and the database returns every document that satisfies the pattern, no more and no less. Common operators include:

  • AND requires both terms: negligence AND duty.
  • OR allows either term: terminate OR fire.
  • Proximity connectors require terms near each other, such as /p (same paragraph) or /s (same sentence): employ! /p non-compet!.
  • Root expander ! matches word endings: employ! catches employ, employee, employment.
  • Quotation marks require an exact phrase: "motion to dismiss".

A full non-compete query might read (terminate OR fire) /p employ! AND non-compet! AND California. It is precise and repeatable, but one wrong connector returns the wrong set, and there is no relevance ranking; you get every hit in date order.

How natural language search works

Natural language search reads your question as language, not as a logic pattern. You type "Is a non-compete enforceable against a remote contractor in California?" and the system identifies the legal concepts, matches them against the corpus, and ranks the most relevant opinions to the top. It forgives imprecise wording and surfaces conceptually related cases even when they use different vocabulary. The trade-off is that you have less explicit control over exactly what is included.

When to use Boolean

Reach for terms-and-connectors when precision matters and you know the language:

  • You are hunting a specific term of art, such as the exact phrase a statute uses.
  • You need an exhaustive set, for example every case in a circuit applying a named test.
  • You want to combine a narrow concept with a jurisdiction and a date range.
  • You are re-running a saved query to catch new decisions on a known issue.

When to use natural language

Reach for plain English when you are starting fresh or thinking conceptually:

  • You are new to an issue and do not yet know the terms of art.
  • The concept has many synonyms and an exact phrase would miss cases.
  • You want the most relevant cases first rather than an exhaustive dump.
  • You are framing the issue the way a client described it.

Experienced researchers use natural language to explore and find the leading cases, then switch to Boolean to run a precise, exhaustive sweep once they know the right terms. Start broad with a plain-English question, read the best opinion, harvest the terms of art the court used, then build a tight Boolean query to make sure you have not missed anything.
