The short answer
The best AI for estate planning attorneys depends on the job that takes the most hours. Drafting wills and trusts from a client interview is document assembly: WealthCounsel and InterActive Legal sell full drafting libraries by quote, and Gavel automates your own templates from 83 dollars a month. Probate and trust administration is a separate purchase, with Estateably at 149 dollars a probate file. Finding the decisions that decide a will contest or a trust dispute is case law research, which CaseSearch does for 49 dollars a month, or 24 billed yearly.

WealthCounsel's membership pages say pricing is based on the number of users in your firm and the products that fit it, and show no figure. InterActive Legal publishes no price either. Gavel shows two different figures for its Standard plan on the same page, so that plan is left out. The LawY pricing page shows 89 dollars per user per month plus local tax and does not name the currency, so confirm it at checkout. Estateably and EstateWorks figures are from their own pricing pages. Prices change; confirm before you sign.
What does AI do for an estate planning attorney?
In a trusts and estates practice, software and AI do four different jobs, and each one is sold separately. The first is drafting: turning a client interview into a revocable trust, a pour-over will, powers of attorney, a healthcare directive and a certificate of trust that all agree with each other. The second is intake and client communication: the questionnaire that collects family, asset and beneficiary facts before the first meeting, and the plain-language summary that explains the plan afterward. The third is administration: probate forms, notices to creditors, inventories and fiduciary accountings once a client has died. The fourth is research: the statute and the appellate decisions that decide whether a no-contest clause holds, a trust can be modified or a transfer survives a challenge.
Most lists of AI tools for estate planning attorneys rank all four in one column, next to consumer will makers and marketing tools, and almost none show a price. That is how a firm ends up paying for a 300 template drafting library when its real problem was probate paperwork. Work out which job costs you the most unbilled time, then price that job.
Drafting
Wills, trusts, powers of attorney, directives, funding letters.
Administration
Probate forms, notices, inventories, fiduciary accountings.
Case law
Will contests, trust disputes, fiduciary duty, tax cases.
What is the best AI for estate planning attorneys?
For drafting, the long-standing choices are document assembly systems, not chatbots. WealthCounsel's Wealth Docx and InterActive Legal both walk you through an interview and produce a full, internally consistent set of documents from attorney-written templates. That is rule-based automation, and for estate plans it is a strength: the trust and the pour-over will name the same trustee because the system will not let them differ. If you would rather keep your own forms, Gavel turns your Word and PDF templates into a client questionnaire for 83 dollars a month on Lite or 290 on Pro.
Generative AI is useful around the edges of that work. It is good at summarizing a 60 page trust for a client letter, comparing a restatement against the original, and drafting the cover email that explains funding. It is a poor choice for writing dispositive provisions from scratch, because a clause that sounds right and conflicts with your state's statute is worse than no clause. For research, CaseSearch answers a plain-English legal question with cited appellate decisions for 49 dollars a month, and Lexis+ or Westlaw cover the same ground with a full citator on one to three year terms.

How much does estate planning software for attorneys cost?
It ranges from under 100 dollars a month to a quote you only get on a sales call. The two best-known drafting libraries, WealthCounsel and InterActive Legal, publish no price. The tools that do publish are cheaper and narrower. Gavel lists Lite at 83 dollars a month with one builder seat and ten templates, and Pro at 290 with two builder seats, 100 templates, a legal template library and e-signature and payment integrations; annual billing gives two months free and the trial lasts seven days with no card.
Administration software is priced by the file or by the year. Estateably charges 149 dollars per probate file and 399 per trust, estate or power of attorney file with no subscription, or sells platform plans from 279 dollars a month (250 billed annually) for ten files a year with unlimited users and a 350 dollar onboarding fee. The math matters here: ten probate-only files cost 1,490 dollars per file, about half of the 3,000 dollar annual Starter plan, so the plan only pays when most of your files are trust or estate files at 399. EstateWorks charges 1,200 to 1,600 dollars per standard user a year plus a one-time 3,000 dollar setup for up to five users. A solo who drafts from their own templates in Gavel Lite and researches on CaseSearch spends 132 dollars a month, or 107 with CaseSearch billed yearly.

How much does WealthCounsel cost?
WealthCounsel does not publish a price. Its membership pages say pricing is based on the number of users in your firm and the products that best fit your needs, and the figure comes after a call with a practice development consultant. What the site does publish is the structure. There are five memberships. Essential includes Wealth Docx Core, with more than 40 interview-driven templates for wills, living trusts and ancillary documents. Elder Law Professional adds Elder Docx. Trusts and Estates Professional moves to Wealth Docx Complete and adds Business Docx, Wealth Tracx for trust administration and Gun Docx. Elite includes all of it, more than 300 templates, and WealthCounsel + LEAP adds LEAP practice management on top.
Every membership includes CLE, member support, an attorney listing and access to the member network, and the comparison table lists LawY, an AI research assistant, among the smart tools. So the quote you receive is driven by two things you control: how many people need a login and which membership you pick. Go into the call knowing both, and ask for the price of the tier below the one you are shown. Our WealthCounsel pricing breakdown covers each membership, the questions to ask and the published-price alternatives.

Which estate planning tools do case law research?
Very few. Gavel, Estateably, EstateWorks and InterActive Legal do not search case law; they produce documents and run files. WealthCounsel memberships include an AI research assistant and a member forum, which are useful for a quick answer and a second opinion, but neither is a case law database with a signal that tells you a decision has been reversed. Lexis+ and Westlaw do the full job, with Shepard's and KeyCite, at prices that start above 100 dollars a month on a three year term.
Research matters more in this practice than its transactional reputation suggests. Whether a no-contest clause is enforced against a beneficiary who had probable cause to sue differs from state to state. So do the presumption of undue influence when a caregiver drafts or procures the will, the standard for admitting a document that was never properly witnessed, and the power to decant or modify an irrevocable trust. Federal cases move planning too: in Connelly v. United States (2024), the Supreme Court held that life insurance proceeds a company receives to redeem a deceased owner's shares count toward the company's value for estate tax, which sent many buy-sell agreements back for review. CaseSearch searches Supreme Court, federal circuit and state appellate decisions in plain English and shows whether each one is still good law.

Is AI safe for confidential estate planning files?
It can be, with the same checks you would run on any vendor that holds client files. An estate planning file contains a client's net worth, account numbers, family conflicts, the child who is being left out and, often, notes about capacity and health. ABA Formal Opinion 512, issued in July 2024, says a lawyer using generative AI must understand how the tool handles client information and, for tools that learn from what users enter, get informed consent before entering confidential details. Ask each vendor in writing whether your uploads train a model, where the data is stored, who can read it and how fast it is deleted when you cancel.
A sensible split keeps exposure small. The drafting system gets the client facts, because that is its purpose and your agreement covers it. A general chatbot gets nothing that identifies a client. The research tool gets the legal question only, with no names, for example whether your state enforces a no-contest clause against a challenge brought with probable cause. And every case you cite in a petition or a brief gets read in full first; a legal citation checker shows whether it has been questioned or overruled.
Ask
Does my data train the model, and where is it stored?
Strip
Client names and identifying facts from research questions.
Review
Every citation before it goes into a filing.
Where CaseSearch fits in a trusts and estates practice
CaseSearch does the research job and nothing else. Ask in plain English, for example what a contestant must show to shift the burden on undue influence in your state when the drafting attorney was chosen by the main beneficiary, and you get the on-point appellate decisions with their citations, the holding in plain language and a signal showing whether each case is still good law. That is the work behind a will contest, a petition to modify a trust, a surcharge action against a trustee or an opinion letter on a planning technique.
It does not draft wills or trusts, fill probate forms or prepare accountings, and it is not legal advice. It costs 49 dollars a month, or 24 a month billed yearly, with no sales call and no multi-year term, and one real question runs with no account so you can judge the answers on your own issue first. Firms that own a drafting system but do not want a three year Westlaw or Lexis contract for the handful of disputes they handle each year use it for exactly that gap.
Does
Controlling cases, holdings, good-law signal.
Does not
Drafting, probate forms or accountings.
Costs
$49 a month, or $24 billed yearly.
Frequently asked
Questions estate planning attorneys ask about AI
What is the best AI for estate planning attorneys?
It depends on the job. For drafting a full plan from an interview, WealthCounsel and InterActive Legal are the established systems, both priced by quote. For automating your own templates, Gavel starts at 83 dollars a month. For probate and trust administration, Estateably starts at 149 dollars a file. For case law, CaseSearch costs 49 dollars a month, or 24 billed yearly.
Will AI replace estate planning attorneys?
No. Software already produces the documents; what clients pay for is the judgment behind them. AI cannot assess capacity, spot a child being pressured by a sibling, choose between a disclaimer trust and a bypass trust for a blended family, or supervise a signing. It shortens intake, first drafts and client summaries, so one attorney can serve more families.
Can ChatGPT draft a will or trust?
It can produce text that looks like a will, but it does not know your state's execution rules, it will not keep the trust and the pour-over will consistent, and it may invent a statute. Use a general chatbot for client letters and summaries on a business plan that does not train on your data. Draft dispositive documents in a system built on attorney-reviewed templates.
How much does WealthCounsel cost?
WealthCounsel publishes no price. Its membership pages say pricing depends on the number of users in your firm and the products you choose, and the quote follows a call with a consultant. There are five memberships, from Essential with Wealth Docx Core to Elite with more than 300 templates, plus a version bundled with LEAP practice management.
What is the best estate planning drafting software for attorneys?
For a complete attorney-written library, WealthCounsel's Wealth Docx and InterActive Legal are the two most established, and both quote on request. If you want to keep your own forms, Gavel automates Word and PDF templates from 83 dollars a month. Lexis+ Enhanced, from 257 dollars a month on a three year term, adds Practical Guidance forms and automated templates to research.
How much does Estateably cost?
Estateably charges 149 dollars per probate file and 399 dollars per trust, estate or power of attorney file with no subscription. Platform plans start at 279 dollars a month, or 250 billed annually, for ten files a year with unlimited users and a 350 dollar onboarding fee. Growth covers 25 files for 648 dollars a month and Pro covers 50 for 1,204.
