The short answer
There is no single best AI for family law, because a divorce practice buys four different jobs. Support, property division and financial affidavit math is done by calculation software such as Family Law Software, from 39.95 dollars a month plus a 99 dollar setup charge. Drafting petitions, parenting plans and settlement agreements from intake forms is document automation, such as Gavel from 83 dollars a month. Deposition and hearing transcripts are summarized per file, CaseMark from 25 dollars a summary. Finding the custody, relocation or equitable distribution decisions that control your motion is case law research, and CaseSearch does that for 49 dollars a month, or 24 billed yearly.

What does family law AI actually do?
Family law AI is not one product. It is four tools aimed at the four places a divorce or custody matter eats hours. The first is the money: financial affidavits, child support guidelines, spousal support, property division and the what-if scenarios a client asks for at every settlement conference. The second is paper: petitions, parenting plans, marital settlement agreements and discovery requests built from the same facts typed into intake. The third is the record: depositions, hearing transcripts and the stack of bank statements and tax returns that come back in discovery. The fourth is the law: what courts in your state have actually done with a relocation request, a commingled inheritance or a cohabitation clause.
Most of the "best AI for family law" lists mix all four together and rank tools that do different jobs against each other. That is how a firm ends up paying for a practice management suite when it needed a support calculator, or buying a research platform on a three year term to answer two relocation questions a quarter. The useful question is which of the four jobs costs your team the most hours, and what the cheapest tool that does that job well costs.

Support, property division, financial affidavits.
Paper
Pleadings, parenting plans, agreements from intake.
Record

What is the best AI for family law firms?
The best AI for a family law firm is the one that matches the job taking the most time, and for most small practices that is still the financial work. Family Law Software is the long-standing choice for financial affidavits, child and spousal support calculations, property division and long-term projections; it is calculation software rather than generative AI, and that is a strength, because support math has to be exact and reproducible in front of a judge. For drafting, Gavel turns a client-facing intake form into finished Word and PDF documents from your own templates, and it integrates with Clio Manage.
For transcripts and discovery documents, CaseMark sells summaries per file with no subscription, and lists family law work such as financial analysis, settlement prep and parenting plan drafting among its uses. For firms already living in Clio, Clio Work adds AI drafting and research on top of the practice management system. And for the legal questions themselves, a research tool that returns cited decisions and shows whether each is still good law is what keeps a brief from resting on a case that was reversed.

How much does family law AI cost?
Less than most firms expect, if you buy by job. Family Law Software lists three cloud plans: Basic at 39.95 dollars a month for financial affidavits and support calculations, Individual at 69.95 dollars for a single user who also needs property division, alimony buyout and arrears tools, and Firm at 79.95 dollars for multi-user access, each with a 99 dollar initial charge and a two month money-back guarantee. Gavel starts at 83 dollars a month on its Lite plan and reaches 290 dollars on Pro, which adds organization seats, a legal template library and payment collection, with a seven day trial and no card required.
CaseMark charges 25 dollars per legal summary and 5 dollars an hour for transcription, with no monthly fee, so a firm that summarizes three depositions a month spends about 75 dollars. Clio Manage starts at 49 dollars per user, and Clio Work launched in October 2025 as a 199 dollar per user add-on for Clio Manage subscribers. The expensive line is usually research: Westlaw Edge for one state starts at 107.25 dollars a month on a three year term, and Lexis+ Essential at 114 dollars, both on multi-year commitments.

Can AI calculate child support and spousal support?
Yes, but use calculation software for the number and generative AI only around it. Every state publishes a child support guideline, usually an income shares or percentage of income formula, and the result has to match the state worksheet to the dollar. Dedicated tools such as Family Law Software run those guidelines, the tax effects and the property division scenarios, and produce the worksheet you attach. A general chatbot can explain a guideline but should not be trusted to produce a figure you will file.
Where a court deviates from the guideline, imputes income to an underemployed parent, or treats a bonus or business income in a particular way, the number depends on case law, not on the calculator. That is the research job: finding the appellate decisions in your state on imputing income, or on whether a spouse's cohabitation ends alimony, and checking that they still stand.
Calculator
The guideline number and the worksheet.
Case law
Deviations, imputed income, modification.
Which family law AI tools do case law research?
Few of them. Family Law Software, Gavel and CaseMark do not search case law at all, and that is by design. Clio Work includes research through vLex, the legal database Clio acquired in 2025, but it is sold per user on top of Clio Manage. Westlaw and Lexis+ do research thoroughly, with KeyCite and Shepard's, but entry plans start above 100 dollars a month and the online prices assume a one to three year term.
Family law questions are state questions, which makes research both narrower and more important than it looks. Nine states (Arizona, California, Idaho, Louisiana, Nevada, New Mexico, Texas, Washington and Wisconsin) are community property states and the rest divide property equitably, so whether a premarital asset became marital through commingling turns on your own appellate courts. Relocation, grandparent visitation and the weight given to a child's preference vary the same way. A plain-English research tool lets you ask the question as you would say it to a colleague and read the controlling decisions.

Is AI safe for confidential family law files?
It can be, if you check three things before uploading anything. Family files carry tax returns, bank statements, medical and mental health records and information about children, so read each vendor's terms on whether your data trains its models, where it is stored, and who at the vendor can see it. The ABA's Formal Opinion 512, issued in July 2024, says lawyers using generative AI must understand the tool well enough to protect client confidentiality, may need informed client consent before entering confidential information into some tools, and must review the output.
A practical rule many family firms adopt: calculation and automation tools get the client's numbers because that is their job, research tools get the legal question without names, and nothing generated goes to the court without a lawyer reading every citation. A question such as whether a Texas court has treated a spouse's separate-property business growth as community property needs no client identifiers at all.
Ask
Does my data train the model, and where is it stored?
Strip
Names and identifiers from research questions.
Review
Every citation before filing.
Where CaseSearch fits in a family law practice
CaseSearch does the research job and nothing else. Ask in plain English, for example whether Florida courts have allowed a parent to relocate more than 50 miles over the other parent's objection where the move was for a job offer, and you get the on-point decisions with citations, the holding in plain language and a signal showing whether each one is still good law. That is the research behind a relocation petition, a response to a modification motion or a memo on whether an inheritance kept its separate character.
It does not calculate support, draft parenting plans or summarize transcripts, and it is not legal advice. It costs 49 dollars a month, or 24 a month billed yearly, with no sales call and no multi-year term, and one real question at the top of this page runs without an account. Paired with a support calculator and a document automation plan, it gives a small family law firm the whole stack for less than one entry-level research platform seat.

Frequently asked
Questions family law attorneys ask about AI
What is the best AI for family law?
It depends on the job. For support and property math, Family Law Software (from 39.95 dollars a month) is the standard. For drafting from intake, Gavel starts at 83 dollars a month. For transcripts, CaseMark charges 25 dollars a summary. For the case law behind a motion, CaseSearch costs 24 to 49 dollars a month.
Can AI be used in family law?
Yes. Family law firms use AI and calculation software to prepare financial affidavits and support worksheets, draft pleadings and parenting plans from intake forms, summarize depositions and financial records, and research custody and property case law. A lawyer still reviews every number and citation before anything is filed.
How much does family law software cost?
Family Law Software, the product of that name, costs 39.95 dollars a month for Cloud Basic, 69.95 for Cloud Individual and 79.95 for Cloud Firm, each plus a 99 dollar initial charge, with a two month money-back guarantee. Practice management suites such as Clio Manage start at 49 dollars per user.
Does Clio have AI for family law?
Clio sells Clio Work, which adds AI drafting and vLex legal research to Clio Manage. It launched in October 2025 at 199 dollars per user per month as an add-on for Clio Manage subscribers; Clio's pricing page now lists it as per-user pricing without a figure. It is not specific to family law.
Can ChatGPT calculate child support?
It can explain how your state's guideline works, but do not rely on it for a figure you will file. Child support has to match the state worksheet to the dollar, so use calculation software or the state's official calculator, and research the case law on deviations and imputed income separately.
Is it ethical for family lawyers to use AI?
Yes, within the rules. ABA Formal Opinion 512 (July 2024) allows generative AI if the lawyer understands the tool, protects client confidentiality, obtains informed consent where needed, reviews the output and bills fairly for the time. Check your state bar's guidance too, since several have issued their own.
