Westlaw Edge Pricing and Alternatives in 2026

Westlaw Edge is no longer sold. Thomson Reuters launched it on July 12, 2018, replaced it with Westlaw Precision in 2022, and replaced Precision with Westlaw Advantage on August 13, 2025. There has never been a public list price for Edge, and there is not one now. What Thomson Reuters does publish, as of August 2026, is Westlaw Advantage at $256.75 per month for a single circuit and $399.75 per month for all states plus federal, online, for firms of up to ten attorneys and new customers only.

If you are searching for Westlaw Edge in 2026 you are almost certainly in one of three situations: you hold a contract that still says Edge on it, you are reading a comparison page written years ago, or someone quoted you a price for a product that has been superseded twice. Here is what Edge actually was, what replaced it, what the current numbers are, and what else is worth pricing before you sign anything.

What happened to Westlaw Edge?

It was superseded, twice. Thomson Reuters announced Westlaw Edge on July 12, 2018 and called it the company's largest investment in artificial intelligence since 2010. Three features carried that launch: WestSearch Plus, a search engine built on machine learning and the company's proprietary taxonomy of the law; KeyCite Overruling Risk, a citator signal that flags a case whose reasoning rests on a prior decision that has itself been overruled; and Litigation Analytics, covering judges, courts, attorneys and firms across federal and state dockets.

Westlaw Precision arrived in 2022 and took over as the current platform. Westlaw Advantage was announced on August 5, 2025 and became available on August 13, 2025. Thomson Reuters has described Advantage as the last named version, on the reasoning that features will now ship continuously rather than in generational releases. The full lineage runs WestlawNext in 2010, Edge in 2018, Precision in 2022, Advantage in 2025.

One piece of Edge outlived the name. KeyCite Overruling Risk is still a live KeyCite signal, shown as an orange flag, and it is genuinely useful because it catches implicit invalidation that a red or yellow flag will not. How much did Westlaw Edge cost?

Thomson Reuters never published a general price for Westlaw Edge, and the figures circulating on comparison sites are almost all either quotes from a specific firm or numbers invented to fill a table. What is documented is the billing structure, and it survived every rename, so it still tells you what you are agreeing to.

Under the Thomson Reuters pricing guidelines for commercial plans effective January 1, 2017, a flat-rate plan gives unlimited use of the content inside your plan. Charges begin when you go outside it, and the unit is the document you view, not the search you run. Transactional rates run $25.00 for a primary law document, $69.00 for a secondary source document and $125.00 for an arbitration document. Hourly rates run $19.55 per minute for primary law and $46.00 per minute for secondary sources.

That distinction is worth holding onto, because the most repeated number in this category is wrong. The widely quoted "$99 per search" is a client cost-recovery figure, the amount a firm bills a client for research, not a rate Thomson Reuters charges the firm. What does Westlaw cost now?

Thomson Reuters publishes current Westlaw Advantage rates through an online configurator, and we re-checked them on August 29, 2026. A single circuit is $256.75 per user per month. All states plus federal is $399.75 per user per month. A two-year term takes 12% off and a three-year term takes 18% off. Two conditions limit who can actually use those numbers: online pricing is offered only to firms of up to ten attorneys, and the promotional rates are for new customers. Existing customers, including anyone still on an Edge or Precision agreement, are routed to a sales line rather than the configurator.

That last point is the practical trap for an Edge subscriber. The published price is not available to you precisely because you are already a customer. Your renewal number comes from a negotiation, and the published figure is useful mainly as the anchor you bring to it.

Westlaw Edge alternatives compared

Prices below are per user per month, and every figure is either published by the vendor or explicitly marked as not published. Nothing here is estimated.

Two things about the free-through-your-bar option have changed and are worth checking before you rely on it. Clio closed its $1 billion acquisition of vLex on November 10, 2025, and vLex had acquired Fastcase in 2023. Separately, "free through your bar" no longer automatically means Fastcase. Decisis, launched by LexisNexis parent RELX in 2021, has gone from ten to twenty bar partnerships including fourteen state bars, and the Wyoming State Bar switched from Fastcase to Decisis effective November 1, 2024. Confirm what your own bar actually provides this year rather than what it provided when you joined.

Is Westlaw Advantage worth upgrading to from Edge?

It depends on your jurisdiction more than on your budget, because the headline feature has a geographic limit that is easy to miss. Advantage leads with Deep Research, an agentic tool that writes a research plan and executes it; Claims Explorer, which works from the facts of a matter toward candidate claims and defenses; a Litigation Document Analyzer that reads an opposing brief and flags mischaracterized authority; and a hallucination checker. Claims Explorer covers California, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania and Texas. If you practice in Kentucky, Ohio or Louisiana, the feature Thomson Reuters is selling hardest does not apply to your state.

On accuracy, the only independent measurement of the previous generation was not flattering to either vendor. Stanford RegLab's preregistered study, published in the Journal of Empirical Legal Studies, found Westlaw AI-Assisted Research accurate on 42% of test queries with a 33% hallucination rate, against 65% accurate and 17% hallucinated for Lexis+ AI. The necessary caveat is that both products tested have since been replaced, so those numbers describe what was measured in 2024, not what is sold today. They are still the only independent numbers that exist, which is why they are worth raising in a demo.

What should I do if my contract still says Westlaw Edge?

Find your notice window before you find a replacement. Legal research agreements are typically multi-year with an evergreen auto-renewal clause that requires written notice, commonly somewhere between thirty and ninety days before the term ends. Miss it and the decision is made for you for another full term, whatever the demo showed. Read your own contract for the exact number rather than assuming a vendor-wide rule, because the number varies by agreement.

Then do the arithmetic on what you are actually using. A firm paying for all states plus federal while researching almost entirely in one circuit is buying coverage it does not touch, and the single-circuit figure above is roughly a third less. Firms that track every recurring software subscription in one place tend to catch that mismatch at renewal rather than three terms later. Pull your usage reports, count the jurisdictions you actually searched, and price the plan against that rather than against the plan you were sold.

Finally, run the switch and the renewal as one process rather than two. The strongest position at renewal is a real alternative you have already tested, and the worst time to start testing is after the notice window closes.
