Clio Work is worth it for a small firm that already runs its matters in Clio Manage and spends its week on document work: deposition transcripts, discovery, contracts and docket activity. It is hard to justify as a legal research tool alone. Clio launched it at $199 per user per month, now sells it only on a quote, and nobody has published an independent accuracy score for its research answers. If research is the job you are buying for, price that job separately before you sign.

This review is written for the lawyer who has a Clio Work demo on the calendar, or a renewal email from Clio suggesting an upgrade to Signature Work, and wants to know what they are really paying for. Everything below comes from Clio's own pricing pages, read on September 25, 2026, from LawSites and Above the Law coverage of the launch, and from the one independent benchmark that has tested the engine underneath.

What does Clio Work actually do?

Clio describes five capabilities on its pricing page. It analyzes documents, transcripts and recordings and cites each finding to its source. It drafts first versions of summaries, timelines, client updates and arguments from your matter details. It searches Clio Library, the former vLex corpus, and checks citations through Cert, Clio's citator. It brings in Clio Docket, with real-time alerts and search across more than 1 billion court filings. And it connects to Clio Manage so it can read your matters and file finished work back to them.

In April 2026 Clio added what it calls a skills infrastructure: you give Clio Work a goal in plain language and it decides which steps to run, rather than making you pick a workflow. The same month Clio released the Vincent by Clio mobile app for iPhone and Android, which draws on matter context for Clio Work subscribers.

The docket coverage is the part most reviews skip. Clio says Clio Docket covers federal district, appellate and bankruptcy courts, PTAB, TTAB, ITC and NLRB proceedings, and major state trial courts. For a firm that currently pays separately for docket monitoring, that belongs in the value calculation.

How much does Clio Work cost?

Clio does not print a price. The Clio Work pricing page says "Clio Work uses per-user pricing" and offers a free trial or a demo. The package page says Signature Work (Clio Manage Signature plus Clio Work) and Elite Work (which adds Clio Grow) are "quote-based" and save over 10 percent and over 18 percent against buying the products separately. The only Clio figure on its pricing page is Clio Manage Starter, from $49 per user per month.

The launch price is public. At ClioCon in October 2025, Clio sold Clio Work as an add-on at $199 per user per month, then only to Clio Manage subscribers. That works out to $2,388 per user per year. Our Clio Work pricing breakdown lays that figure next to every published Westlaw and Lexis+ plan and lists what to ask for in the quote.

Put that in context. Westlaw Edge for one state costs $107.25 a month on a three year term, and Lexis+ Essential $114 per attorney on three years. Both carry a mature citator. Westlaw Edge with AI-Assisted Research at single circuit costs $210.40 a month on a one year term, close to the Clio Work launch price. So at $199, Clio Work is priced like a legal AI product, not like a budget research database.

Is Clio Work good for legal research?

It has a large library and a citator, which puts it ahead of general chatbots. What it does not have is independent evidence on research accuracy. The one benchmark that tested the engine, the Vals Legal AI Report of February 2025, measured Vincent AI on document tasks, not on research answers. Vincent scored 53.6 to 72.7 percent across five tasks and beat the lawyer baseline on three: document Q and A (72.7 against 70.1), transcript analysis (64.8 against 53.7) and document summarization (58.9 against 50.3).

When Vals ran a dedicated legal research benchmark in October 2025, vLex agreed to take part and then withdrew before results were published; a vLex spokesperson said the study "was not designed for enterprise AI tools". The tools that did take part (Alexi, Counsel Stack, Midpage and ChatGPT) scored 79 to 81 percent against a lawyer baseline of 71. That leaves a buyer with no independent research number for Clio Work, so test it yourself before you commit.

Coverage is broad by design. Clio Library spans more than 100 countries, which matters to a firm with cross-border work. For a US solo litigating in one state, most of that library is weight you pay for and do not use.

Clio Work pros and cons

Pros

  • Reads the matter you already keep in Clio Manage, which no outside AI tool can do without an export.
  • Strong at transcript and document work, the tasks where Vincent beat the lawyer baseline.
  • Docket alerts and federal filings search included in the workspace.
  • Monthly or annual billing, and Clio says you can cancel any time, effective at the end of the current term.
  • Live 24/5 support and training on every plan.

Cons

  • No published price. You negotiate from a launch figure.
  • No independent research accuracy score.
  • Package savings are stated as percentages with no base price to check them against.
  • Expensive if you only need case law research.
  • Owners of older vLex and Fastcase contracts have to find out what changes at renewal.

Who should buy Clio Work?

Buy it if three things are true: you already run your practice in Clio Manage, at least one lawyer spends hours a week on transcripts, discovery or contract review, and you would otherwise pay for docket monitoring. In that firm the package discount does real work, and the matter context is something no standalone tool matches.

If intake is what is pushing you toward Elite Work, check first whether a lighter tool covers it. Clio Grow's consultation booking is one of the headline reasons to move up a plan, and an online booking tool for consultations may do that one job without changing your whole subscription.

Skip it if your firm does not use Clio Manage and your main need is research. You would be paying for a document and drafting workspace to get answers about case law, and the research side is the part with no independent test behind it.

What is a cheaper alternative to Clio Work for case law research?

If the job is finding the decisions that control a question and making sure they still stand, CaseSearch is built for exactly that. You ask a legal question in plain English and get the on-point decisions with citations, the holding in plain language and a good-law signal. It costs $49 a month month to month or $24 a month billed yearly, printed on the page, with no demo and no seat minimum. You can run the research console at the top of this page right now.

CaseSearch does not read your matter files, draft motions or watch dockets, so it is not a replacement for Clio Work in a firm that needs those. It is the cheaper answer when research is the whole job, and a reasonable companion to Clio Manage when the firm does not need the rest. If you are comparing the whole field, our guide to AI legal research tools covers the other options, and Vincent AI alternatives compares CaseSearch with the engine inside Clio Work directly.

What to test in a Clio Work free trial

The pricing page offers a "Try for free" button, but does not say how long the trial lasts. Use it on work you already know the answer to:

  • Upload a deposition transcript you have already digested and compare its summary with yours.
  • Ask three research questions in your own state whose controlling authority you already know, and open every case it cites.
  • Check whether Cert flags a case you know was reversed or limited.
  • Set a docket alert on an active federal case and time how fast the next filing shows up.
  • Ask the sales rep for the per-user price on monthly and annual billing, in writing, before the trial ends.

Frequently asked questions

Is Clio Work worth the money?

For a firm already on Clio Manage that does heavy document and transcript work, it can be, especially bought inside a package that Clio says saves 10 to 18 percent. For a firm that mainly needs case law research, $199 per user per month (the launch price) is a lot to pay for a tool with no independent research accuracy score.

Is Clio Work the same as Vincent AI?

Clio Work runs on Vincent AI, the assistant vLex built and Clio acquired when it completed its $1 billion purchase of vLex in November 2025. Vincent is the engine; Clio Work is the product Clio sells, which adds Clio Manage integration, Clio Docket and the matter workspace.

How much is Clio Work per month?

Clio does not publish a current price. It launched Clio Work in October 2025 at $199 per user per month for Clio Manage subscribers, and now prices it per user on a quote, with monthly and annual billing.

Can I use Clio Work without Clio Manage?

Yes. Since April 2026 Clio Work is sold on its own to solo, small and mid-sized firms. You upload documents directly, and you can connect Clio Manage later if you want matter context.
