Thomson Reuters does publish a CoCounsel Legal price, and almost every page written about it says otherwise. The number is real, it is online, and it takes four answers to reach: your sector, your number of attorneys, your jurisdiction, and your plan duration. The catch is who it is for. The plans and pricing page states that plans are available for law firms of 1 to 10 attorneys, that larger firms call 888-728-7677 and select option 2, and that online pricing is available to new customers only. If you are renewing, the published rate is not yours.

That is what the Thomson Reuters CoCounsel Legal plans and pricing page showed on September 16, 2026. It matters because the standard advice about legal AI pricing, that none of it is published and all of it is a sales call, is now only half true. The gate is a form, not a phone call, and the difference is worth about twenty minutes of your afternoon.

How much does CoCounsel Legal cost?

Thomson Reuters shows you a figure once you complete the configurator, and it does not show one before. There is no rate card on the page, no starting-from number, and no dollar sign anywhere in the markup. What the page does expose is the structure of the quote, and the structure tells you most of what drives the price.

What the configurator asksOptions it offersWhy it moves the price
SectorLaw firm, or BusinessRoutes you to a different plan set entirely
Number of attorneys1 to 10 for the online pathPer-seat pricing, and the cutoff for self-serve
JurisdictionSelected per state or circuitWestlaw content underneath is priced by coverage
Plan duration1 year, 2 years, 3 years3 years is flagged Best value in the interface

The order summary panel on that page lists exactly those four inputs plus Product, Plan and Total before tax. So the price you are quoted is a function of coverage and commitment, in the same way a Westlaw subscription is, which is unsurprising given what sits underneath. Thomson Reuters describes CoCounsel Legal as the only AI that reasons from Westlaw, Practical Law, and your firm's own knowledge, and positions it as working at the level of a senior associate.

The closest published anchor remains Westlaw itself. Thomson Reuters' plan configurator prices Westlaw Advantage at 288.60 dollars a month for one attorney on single circuit coverage and 447.85 dollars a month for all states plus federal, both on a three year term (355.20 and 551.20 on one year), for firms of up to 10 attorneys; the FAQ on the same page still says pricing starts at 256.75 and 399.75 dollars, which is what the configurator showed until early September 2026. CoCounsel Legal is the AI layer that reasons over that content, so a CoCounsel Legal quote sensibly starts from the Westlaw line rather than below it. For the full picture of what the underlying research platform runs, see our Westlaw pricing breakdown.

What is CoCounsel Legal?

Thomson Reuters describes it, in its own FAQ, as an advanced AI legal assistant designed to help legal professionals work faster and more accurately, supporting legal research, drafting and document analysis, and including end-to-end agentic workflows, Deep Research, and an expert-built prompt library. It is the current generation of the assistant that began life as Casetext CoCounsel, which Thomson Reuters acquired in 2023.

The important commercial distinction is between CoCounsel Legal and CoCounsel Essentials, which Thomson Reuters sells as a separate product with its own plans page. That page carries no price either, and routes you through the same kind of questionnaire. If a quote lands in your inbox, check which of the two products it names before you compare it with anything.

The one CoCounsel configuration that prices in two answers is the Westlaw bundle. Westlaw Advantage with CoCounsel Essentials returned $415.35 a month for one attorney at single circuit on a three year term when we read it on September 21, 2026, and $519.35 at all states and federal, which puts the CoCounsel Essentials share at $71.50 to $126.75 a month. The full matrix is in our Westlaw CoCounsel pricing guide.

Are the online CoCounsel prices available to existing customers?

No. The Thomson Reuters FAQ answers this directly: online pricing is available to new customers only, and existing customers are told to contact sales at 888-728-7677 and select option 2, or use the contact form. This is the single most expensive line on the page and the one buyers read past.

The practical consequence is that the configurator is a shopping tool for people who are not yet customers, and a benchmark for people who are. If you already pay Thomson Reuters, you cannot buy at the online rate, but nothing stops you from finding out what it is before your renewal call. Walking into that call with the current new-customer number for your exact jurisdiction and seat count changes the conversation from a percentage increase into a comparison.

How can I save money on CoCounsel Legal?

Thomson Reuters gives one answer and it is term length: the FAQ says 2-year and 3-year plans provide better value than a 1-year plan, and the interface flags the three year option as Best value. On Westlaw Advantage, the published equivalents of those discounts are 12 and 18 percent.

Take that trade seriously rather than reflexively. Eighteen percent off is real money, and it is money spent on a three year commitment to a product category that has changed shape three times in three years: Casetext acquired in 2023, the standalone Casetext product shut down on March 31, 2025, and the current CoCounsel Legal generation arriving in 2026. The one year rate is the price of being able to leave, and in a market moving this fast that option has a value of its own. If a multi-year software commitment is going on the books, it belongs somewhere you will actually see it again, which for most small firms means the same case and matter management system that tracks every other deadline in the practice.

One term worth reading carefully: Thomson Reuters states that new features are included in CoCounsel plans as they become available, so you will not need to upgrade to a different plan during your initial contract term. That is a genuinely good clause and worth confirming in writing on your own order form, because it is the thing that most often gets renegotiated at the point of renewal.

How quickly can I access CoCounsel Legal after signing up?

Thomson Reuters says most customers receive online access within one business day of signing up, with credentials sent once the account is ready. That is fast for an enterprise legal product and it is consistent with what the same company publishes for Westlaw Advantage.

How CoCounsel Legal pricing compares to the rest of the market

The pattern across legal AI in 2026 is strikingly consistent. Almost every generative AI flagship hides its price behind something, and almost every product that publishes a number outright is either a research tool or the tier underneath the AI. The exception is new: on a store version LexisNexis began testing in October 2026, Lexis+ with Protege is priced at 495 dollars per attorney per month on a three year term for firms of one to three attorneys, though other visitors still see Pricing on request.

The comparison that decides the purchase is not between two AI assistants. It is between the job you actually do and the bundle you are being sold. CoCounsel Legal earns its price at a firm that runs research, drafting and document review through one assistant most days of the week. It is expensive capability at a firm whose real workload is finding the controlling case, reading the holding, and confirming it has not been undercut. Our breakdown of what CoCounsel costs in practice goes through that split in more detail, and LexisNexis Protege pricing covers how the other incumbent handles the same question.

What to do before you open the configurator

Write down the ten questions you researched last month. Not hypotheticals, the actual ones, with the jurisdiction each one belonged to. Then run the configurator for that exact jurisdiction and your real headcount, and get the total before tax on all three term lengths. That gives you a number per lawyer per year that you can compare with what you currently spend, which is the only comparison that matters.

Then price the narrow option honestly against the same list. If eight of those ten questions were "what case controls this and is it still good law", you are looking at a research problem rather than a platform problem. The full pricing comparison puts every option on one page, and the Casetext alternatives page is the right starting point if you came to CoCounsel through the 2025 shutdown rather than by choice.

Frequently asked questions

Does Thomson Reuters publish CoCounsel Legal pricing?

Yes, but only through an online configurator. The plans and pricing page carries no dollar figure until you answer four questions: sector, number of attorneys, jurisdiction, and preferred plan duration. It then shows a plan and a total before tax. The published path covers law firms of 1 to 10 attorneys, and Thomson Reuters states that online pricing is available to new customers only.

Why can I not see a CoCounsel Legal price?

Because the price depends on the four inputs the configurator collects, and Thomson Reuters prices the Westlaw and Practical Law content underneath by jurisdiction and seat count. There is no single rate to publish. If the form will not show you a number, the usual reasons are that you selected more than 10 attorneys or that you are an existing customer, both of which route to 888-728-7677.

Is CoCounsel Legal the same as Casetext?

It is the descendant. Thomson Reuters acquired Casetext in 2023 and shut down the standalone Casetext product on March 31, 2025, folding its research into CoCounsel on Westlaw. The research capability carried over, the packaging and the price did not, which is why so many former Casetext subscribers went shopping rather than renewing.

What is the difference between CoCounsel Legal and CoCounsel Essentials?

They are two separate Thomson Reuters products with two separate plans pages, and neither publishes a price without the questionnaire. CoCounsel Legal is the one described as uniting research, drafting and document analysis with agentic workflows and Deep Research. Check which product your quote names before you compare it against anything else.

Is there a cheaper alternative to CoCounsel Legal for case law research?

Yes, if research is the job rather than drafting and review. Self-serve research tools publish their prices and skip the configurator entirely. CaseSearch runs from 24 dollars a month, takes a legal question in plain English, and returns on-point decisions with reporter citations, the holding in plain language, and a still-good-law signal, with no seat minimum and no multi-year term.

CaseSearch is a research accelerator, not legal advice, and every price above should be confirmed against your own order form before you sign anything.
