A sole practitioner pays LexisNexis 114 to 324 dollars a month for Lexis+ on a three year term, or 152 to 432 dollars on a one year term, bought online from the LexisNexis store for firms of one to three attorneys. The cheapest plan, Lexis+ Essential, covers one state with no federal case law. LexisNexis's own Small Law price schedule adds a 25 dollar monthly administration charge for firms of one to five attorneys and prices anything outside your plan by the document, from 24 dollars to open a case. The AI assistant, Protege, is not in any of those prices; it is sold as a separate tier, priced at 495 dollars a month on a three year term on a store version LexisNexis began testing in October 2026, and on request on the older store page.
Those figures come from two LexisNexis sources that most pricing articles skip. The first is the law firm store at store.lexisnexis.com, read on September 22, 2026. The second is the LexisNexis Small Law price schedule, a public page on lexisnexis.com effective December 5, 2023, which lists the transactional list prices that apply to small firms. Below is what a solo actually pays, which plan fits which practice, and where the bill grows after you sign.
How much is LexisNexis per month?
LexisNexis costs a solo 114 to 324 dollars a month for Lexis+ on a three year term and 152 to 432 dollars a month on a one year term, depending on the plan. Lexis+ Essential, one state with Shepard's, is the cheapest at 114. Add the 25 dollar monthly administration charge if your order form includes it, and per-document fees for anything outside your plan.
If what you mainly need is the case law that answers a question and a check that it is still good law, CaseSearch costs 49 dollars a month, or 24 a month billed yearly, with no term commitment.
LexisNexis cost for a sole practitioner, by plan
The store sells four Lexis+ plans to firms of one to three attorneys; at more than three seats it tells you to contact sales. You pick your jurisdiction before anything is priced (there are 54 options), then a term. The store shows the three year rate as the headline figure with the one year rate struck through beside it, and a two year term at 10 percent off the one year rate. The prices are marked as online promo prices for new customers only.
| Lexis+ plan | 1 year term, per month | 3 year term, per month | Per year, 3 year term | What it adds |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Essential | $152 | $114 | $1,368 | Your state's case law and statutes, Shepard's, Brief Analysis, Litigation Analytics |
| Deluxe Transactional | $289 | $217 | $2,604 | Practical Guidance, forms and automated templates, Lexis Create+; built for deal work |
| Enhanced | $342 | $257 | $3,084 | Everything in Essential plus federal cases and Practical Guidance |
| Professional | $432 | $324 | $3,888 | Adds CourtLink, Verdict and Settlement Analyzer, Law360, Factiva news, law reviews |
| Protege Assistant with Lexis Complete | $660 | $495 | $5,940 | The AI assistant on top of the research library, on a store version in testing since October 2026 (the older page shows Pricing on request and a Free Trial button) |
| Protege Firm Documents with Lexis Complete | $793 | $595 | $7,140 | Adds upload of your own documents, Vault and Create+, same store version |
Annual figures are our multiplication of the store's monthly rates. On the two year term, 10 percent off the one year rate puts Essential at about 136.80 dollars a month; confirm the exact figure in the checkout, because the store rounds.
For most solos the real choice is between Essential and Enhanced, and the dividing line is federal court. Essential gives you one state and Shepard's for 114 dollars a month over three years. If you appear in federal court, or you regularly need federal decisions to argue a state issue, Essential will keep sending you outside your plan, and Enhanced at 257 dollars is the plan that covers it. That is a jump of 143 dollars a month, or 1,716 dollars a year, for one feature, so it pays to know how often you really need it.
What the Small Law price schedule adds to a solo's bill
The store price is the flat rate. The schedule is everything else. LexisNexis states on it that these prices "will not affect the price of your flat rate subscription but do apply to Materials used outside of your subscription." In plain terms: open something your plan does not include and you pay for it at these rates. The Small Law schedule is noticeably cheaper than the large firm one, which charges 99 dollars for the system access charge where the small firm schedule charges 60.
| Charge on the Small Law schedule | List price |
|---|---|
| Administration charge, 1 to 5 attorney firms | $25 per month |
| Administration charge, 6 to 10 attorney firms | $50 per month |
| System access charge (activities listed in LexisNexis help files) | $60 |
| Primary law outside your plan: cases, codes, statutes, court rules, regulations | $24 per document |
| Secondary materials, tier 2: treatises, law reviews, jury instructions, verdicts | $53 per document |
| Practical Guidance, or tier 1 secondary sources such as Collier and Nimmer | $95 per document |
| Briefs, pleadings and motions (premium litigation) | $100 per document |
| Shepard's report outside your plan | $15 per report |
| Lexis+ AI: Ask, or Document Upload and Ask | $60 per request |
| Lexis+ AI: Summarize, Drafting, or Document Upload and Summarize | $95 per request |
| CourtLink court documents | $7 per document |
Two lines matter most to a solo. The administration charge is listed at 25 dollars a month for firms of one to five attorneys; the schedule does not say whether it is added on top of a store subscription, so ask for your order form to state it either way. If it applies, Essential on a three year term is 139 dollars a month, not 114. The second is the 24 dollar primary law charge. A solo on Essential who pulls ten federal decisions in a month has spent 240 dollars outside the plan, which is almost the whole price difference to Enhanced.

Is there a LexisNexis discount for solo practitioners?
The discount LexisNexis publishes for a solo is the term. Three years costs 25 percent less per month than one year, which on Essential is 38 dollars a month and on Professional 108. Two years saves 10 percent. There is no separate solo price list on the store; the same four plans are offered to firms of one, two or three attorneys, and the online prices are limited to new customers.
Weigh the term carefully. A three year Lexis+ contract is a 36 month commitment at the rate you sign, and research contracts renew on notice windows that are easy to miss. If you sign one, keep the order form in contract management software that never misses a renewal date, because the renewal price is where the multi-year discount usually disappears. Our guide to cancelling a Westlaw or LexisNexis subscription explains the notice rule.
If you want to test before paying, LexisNexis runs trial offers for Lexis+ and for Lexis+ with Protege; we list the current ones and who is excluded in LexisNexis free trial.
Is Westlaw cheaper than LexisNexis for a solo?
At the entry level, slightly. Thomson Reuters sells Westlaw Edge for one state at 132 dollars a month on a one year term and 107.25 on three years, against 152 and 114 for Lexis+ Essential. Both include a citator (KeyCite on Westlaw, Shepard's on Lexis+). Once you add federal coverage the gap widens in Westlaw's favor: Westlaw Edge with AI-Assisted Research for a single federal circuit is 170.95 dollars a month on three years, while the cheapest Lexis+ plan with federal cases, Enhanced, is 257. We lay both rate cards side by side in Westlaw vs LexisNexis pricing.
Lexis+ wins where its bundle is worth something to you: Practical Guidance on Enhanced, or Law360 and CourtLink on Professional. A solo who would otherwise pay for a news service or a docket tool separately should price the Professional plan against that combination, not against Westlaw alone.
Is LexisNexis worth it for a solo practitioner?
It is worth it when your research is broad: several practice areas, secondary sources you read every week, forms you draft from, federal and state work in the same month. A full library on a three year term is a reasonable purchase for that practice.
It is harder to justify when your research is narrow. Many solos spend most of their research time on one question: which cases control this issue in my state, and are they still good law? Paying 1,368 to 3,888 dollars a year, plus an administration charge and out-of-plan fees, for that one job is a lot. CaseSearch is built for it: ask a legal question in plain English and get the on-point US decisions with citations, the holding in plain language and a good-law signal, for 49 dollars a month month to month or 24 dollars a month billed yearly, with no three year term and no administration charge. Frequently asked questions
How much does LexisNexis cost per month for a solo?
Between 114 and 324 dollars a month on a three year term, or 152 to 432 dollars on a one year term, depending on which of the four Lexis+ plans you buy. The Small Law price schedule also lists a 25 dollar monthly administration charge for firms of one to five attorneys, so ask whether your order form includes it.
Can a solo attorney buy LexisNexis online?
Yes. The LexisNexis law firm store sells Lexis+ to firms of one to three attorneys with a published price, a jurisdiction picker and a checkout. Firms with more than three attorneys are sent to sales. The online prices are promotional prices for new customers only.
Is Protege included in Lexis+ for solo practitioners?
No. The four priced Lexis+ plans do not include the Protege AI assistant. Lexis+ with Protege is a separate package: 495 dollars a month on a three year term, or 660 on one year, for a solo on the store version LexisNexis began testing in October 2026, while the older store page lists it as "Pricing on request" with a free trial button. Outside a Protege plan, the Small Law schedule prices AI requests at 60 dollars for an Ask and 95 for a summary or draft.
What is the cheapest LexisNexis plan?
Lexis+ Essential, at 114 dollars a month on a three year term or 152 dollars on one year, for one state. It includes Shepard's, Brief Analysis and Litigation Analytics but not federal cases, which start on the Enhanced plan at 257 dollars a month over three years.
