Lexis Practical Guidance is not sold as its own self-serve product. On the LexisNexis law firm store it comes inside three Lexis+ plans: Deluxe Transactional at $217 per attorney per month, Enhanced at $257 and Professional at $324, all on a three year term ($289, $342 and $432 on one year). Essential, at $114, does not include it. Outside a plan, LexisNexis charges $95 for each Practical Guidance document you open. Figures read from the store and the LexisNexis Small Law price schedule on October 2, 2026.
Practical Guidance is the LexisNexis know-how library: practice notes, annotated forms, templates, clauses, checklists and state Q&A, written by practicing lawyers. It used to be sold as Lexis Practice Advisor and took its current name when Lexis+ launched in September 2020. If you are pricing it, the question is not what Practical Guidance costs but which plan you have to buy to get it, and what else that plan does or does not include. That second part is where most small firms overpay or end up short.
How much does Lexis Practical Guidance cost?
From $217 a month per attorney on a three year term, which is $2,604 a year. That is the Deluxe Transactional plan, the cheapest published plan that includes Practical Guidance. On a one year term the same plan is $289 a month, or $3,468 a year. The store sells these plans to firms of one to three attorneys; four or more go to a sales quote.
The store prices each plan three ways. The big figure is the three year rate (25% off), the struck figure is the one year rate, and a two year term takes 10% off the one year price. The promotional prices are marked for new customers only, and you have to pick a jurisdiction before anything prices, because the state you choose decides the state content in the plan.
| Lexis+ plan | Practical Guidance | 3 year term | 2 year term | 1 year term |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Essential | Not included | $114 a month | $136.80 a month | $152 a month |
| Deluxe Transactional | Included | $217 a month | $260.10 a month | $289 a month |
| Enhanced | Included | $257 a month | $307.80 a month | $342 a month |
| Professional | Included | $324 a month | $388.80 a month | $432 a month |
Two year figures are our arithmetic from the store's stated 10% discount on the one year price. Every price is per attorney.
Which Lexis+ plans include Practical Guidance?
Deluxe Transactional, Enhanced and Professional. The store's feature grid lists Practical Guidance and LexisNexis Forms in all three, along with Automated Templates. What separates them is everything around the guidance.
- Deluxe Transactional ($217): Practical Guidance, Forms, Automated Templates and Lexis Create+, the drafting add-in for Microsoft Word. It is the only plan with Create+.
- Enhanced ($257): Practical Guidance and Forms plus state case law, federal case law, Shepard's, Brief Analysis, verdicts and settlements for your state, and the practice library.
- Professional ($324): everything in Enhanced with 50 state case law, all-state verdicts, CourtLink, Law360 and core law reviews.
So a firm that drafts deals all day and never litigates can buy Deluxe Transactional and get the guidance plus Create+ for $40 a month less than Enhanced. A firm that needs the guidance and also argues motions should start at Enhanced. Our full LexisNexis pricing breakdown has every line of the grid.
Does Deluxe Transactional include case law?
No. In the store's feature grid, Deluxe Transactional shows no state cases, no federal cases, and none of the research tools: no Shepard's, no Statutes Compare, no Brief Analysis and no Litigation Analytics. It is a drafting plan. That is fine for a pure transactional practice, but a lawyer who buys it for the forms and later needs to check whether a case still controls has nothing to check it with inside the plan.
What does Practical Guidance cost outside a plan?
$95 per document. The LexisNexis Small Law price schedule, effective December 5, 2023, puts practice notes, templates, clauses, checklists, articles and state Q&A in a Practical Guidance pricing category at $95 for each document accessed, with no delivery charge. That is the rate a firm on Essential pays if it opens Practical Guidance content its plan does not include.
The math turns quickly. Three Practical Guidance documents a month outside your plan cost $285, which is more than the $143 a month it takes to move from Essential ($114) to Enhanced ($257) on a three year term. If anyone at the firm will reach for a form or a practice note more than once a month, buy a plan that includes it. Our guide to what LexisNexis charges per search lists the other out-of-plan rates.
Does Lexis+ with Protege include Practical Guidance?
Yes. LexisNexis began testing a new version of its law firm store in October 2026, and in that version the only two packages are Lexis+ with Protege bundles, both with Practical Guidance and Forms included. Protege Assistant with Lexis Complete costs $495 a month per attorney on a three year term ($660 on one year). Protege Firm Documents with Lexis Complete, which adds uploading your own documents, Vault and Create+, costs $595 ($793 on one year). Both also include CourtLink, Factiva news, Shepard's and Document Analysis.
Some visitors still see the older store with the four plans above and a Lexis+ with Protege row that reads "Pricing on request". If you only want the guidance and forms, the Protege bundles are the most expensive way to get them; they make sense when the firm also wants the AI assistant. We cover that decision on our LexisNexis Protege pricing page.
Lexis Practical Guidance vs Practical Law, which costs less?
Lexis Practical Guidance, on published prices. The cheapest Lexis+ plan with it is $217 a month on three years. Thomson Reuters sells Practical Law to firms of up to 10 attorneys from $230.75 a month on a three year term for Practical Law Drafting and Negotiating, $349.70 for Premium and $403 for Multi-Practice Premium with Dynamic Tool Set.
| Product | Cheapest published plan | Includes case law? | Sold online to |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lexis Practical Guidance | $217 a month (Deluxe Transactional, 3 years) | Not in that plan. Yes from Enhanced at $257 | 1 to 3 attorneys |
| Practical Law | $230.75 a month (Drafting and Negotiating, 3 years) | No, in any plan | Up to 10 attorneys |
The real difference is what comes with it. Practical Law contains no case law in any plan, because it is a know-how product that sits beside Westlaw. Lexis bundles its guidance with case law and Shepard's from the Enhanced plan up. A small firm that needs both forms and research gets them on one Lexis bill, while the Thomson Reuters route means two subscriptions. Our Practical Law pricing page has the full Thomson Reuters plan list.
Practical Guidance for the drafting, a cheaper tool for the case law
Many small transactional firms only need case law a few times a month: whether a non-compete will hold in their state, whether a limitation of liability clause has been enforced, whether a court has read a particular indemnity provision narrowly. Paying $40 more a month for Enhanced, on a three year term, just to cover those questions is a real cost over the life of the contract, $1,440 per attorney.
The alternative is Deluxe Transactional for the guidance, forms and Create+, plus a research tool for the case law. CaseSearch answers questions like those in plain English: ask whether Florida courts enforce a non-solicitation clause against a former employee who never signed one, and it returns the on-point state and federal decisions with their citations, the holding in plain language and a good-law signal. You can run one question in the tool at the top of this page with no account. After that it is $49 a month, or $24 a month billed yearly, with no multi-year term, and CaseSearch pricing is printed on the page. It is not Shepard's and it does not hold forms, so it complements Practical Guidance rather than replacing it.
Once the agreement is drafted, some of it will need a notary: acknowledgments on a deed, an affidavit, a closing certificate. If the signers are in different states, a remote online notarization platform saves scheduling an in-person signing.
Questions buyers ask about Lexis Practical Guidance pricing
Can I buy Lexis Practical Guidance on its own?
Not on the LexisNexis law firm store. Practical Guidance is sold inside Lexis+ plans: Deluxe Transactional from $217, Enhanced from $257 and Professional from $324 per attorney per month on a three year term. Firms of four or more attorneys, and anyone wanting a guidance-only license, have to request a quote from LexisNexis sales.
What is the cheapest way to get Lexis Practical Guidance?
Lexis+ Deluxe Transactional at $217 a month per attorney on a three year term, or $289 on one year. It includes Practical Guidance, LexisNexis Forms, Automated Templates and Lexis Create+, but no case law and no Shepard's, so it suits firms that draft rather than litigate.
Is Lexis Practice Advisor the same as Practical Guidance?
Yes. LexisNexis renamed Lexis Practice Advisor to Practical Guidance in the US and Canada when it launched Lexis+ in September 2020. The content is the same family of practice notes, annotated forms, checklists and templates, now sold inside Lexis+ plans.
Does Lexis Practical Guidance have a free trial?
Not as a separate guidance-only trial on the store. On the older store page the Free Trial button sits on the Lexis+ with Protege listing, which includes Practical Guidance, while the four priced plans show Subscribe Now. Ask LexisNexis in writing which plan and which practice areas the trial covers before you plan an evaluation around it.
