How much does LexisNexis cost per month?

For a solo or a firm of up to three attorneys, between 114 and 432 dollars per attorney per month depending on the tier and the length of the commitment. The low end is Essential on a three year term and the high end is Professional paid a year at a time. Those numbers come off the LexisNexis law firm store, where they were checked on August 31, 2026.

The detail that changes the arithmetic is that the store displays the three year price as the headline figure and shows the one year price next to it struck through, the way a retailer shows a sale. Read quickly, Essential looks like a 114 dollar product. It is a 114 dollar product only if you sign for 36 months. For twelve months you pay 152. Across a three attorney firm that difference is 1,368 dollars a year, and it is the single easiest thing to misread on the page.

It is worth pricing the term honestly rather than reflexively taking the discount. Twenty five percent off is a real saving, but it is a saving bought with a three year commitment to a category that has changed platform generation four times in fifteen years. The one year rate is the price of being able to leave.

Can anyone buy a LexisNexis subscription?

No. Self-serve purchasing stops at three attorneys. The store asks how many attorneys are in your organization, offers one, two or three as the only choices, and for anything larger says plainly that you should contact the company. Everyone above that line, meaning midsize and large firms, in-house departments, government offices and universities, goes through a representative who configures content and quotes a price that is not published anywhere.

The counting rule matters more than people expect. LexisNexis defines an attorney for this purpose as anyone in your organization who provides billable services to clients or sits in a legal advisory role, not simply anyone with a bar card on the letterhead. A four person practice where one person is of counsel is over the line.

The effect is that the smallest buyers are the only ones who can see a price at all, and they pay the highest effective per lawyer rate, since volume pricing lives on the other side of the phone call. That is the opposite of how most software is sold, and it is worth knowing before you assume the published number is a bad deal you could beat by negotiating. At one to three seats there is nothing to negotiate against.

Is there a LexisNexis free trial?

There are several, of different lengths, and that is the confusing part. The law firm store offers a free trial specifically against the Lexis+ with Protege listing. Separately, LexisNexis has run a 7 day Lexis+ trial, a 14 day Practice Advisor trial, a 30 day offer, and the trial terms page for the promotional Trial ID states that the offer is valid for up to 2 consecutive days of use beginning with first issuance. Which one you get depends on which product and which promotion you came in through, so the length is worth confirming in writing before you plan an evaluation around it.

The eligibility restrictions are stricter than most people expect and they are where evaluations fall over. The Trial ID terms state that use is limited to the individual user only, that one trial is allowed per recipient per year, and that the trial is not available to employees of government entities, academic institutions, individual consumers, individual students or employees of LexisNexis competitors. LexisNexis also states it will verify the information you provide to determine eligibility and may terminate access for any reason.

Read against the Westlaw trial, the contrast is sharp. Thomson Reuters offers a single clear 7 day Westlaw Advantage trial, asks for no credit card, says you will not be billed until you sign up, and explicitly accommodates pro se individuals. LexisNexis runs several overlapping offers with narrower eligibility. Neither approach is wrong, but only one of them lets you plan an evaluation without a phone call.

How does LexisNexis pricing compare to Westlaw and the alternatives?

On published numbers, LexisNexis is the cheaper of the two incumbents at the entry point and they converge at the top. Thomson Reuters publishes exactly two Westlaw prices, both for Westlaw Advantage: 256.75 dollars per month for single circuit coverage and 399.75 for all states plus federal. LexisNexis publishes four, from 114 to 432. So the cheapest published way into either platform is Lexis Essential, and the cheapest way into a plan that includes federal material is Lexis Enhanced at 257 on a three year term against Westlaw Advantage at 256.75 for one circuit.

The comparison is only fair if you hold coverage constant, and this is where most side-by-side articles go wrong. Lexis Essential at 114 dollars is a one state plan with no federal caselaw. Westlaw Advantage at 256.75 is a federal circuit plan. They are not competing products at competing prices, they are different products, and lining up the two lowest numbers on a page produces a comparison that means nothing.
