On a flat-rate Lexis+ subscription, no: a search inside your plan costs nothing extra. LexisNexis does publish a per-search price list, though, and it applies the moment you use something your plan does not cover. Its Law Firm Per Search price schedule charges $2 to open a case or statute outside your plan, $53 to $95 for secondary sources, $221 for a 50 state survey and a $99 System Access Charge, and its 2026 Large Legal schedule charges $99 for each out-of-plan AI answer. Unlike Westlaw, LexisNexis keeps those rates on a public page, so you can check them before you sign rather than after the first invoice.
If you came here for the subscription price itself: LexisNexis costs $114 to $324 per attorney per month for the four Lexis+ research plans on a three year term ($152 to $432 on one year), and $495 to $595 a month for Lexis+ with Protege on the store version LexisNexis began testing in October 2026. The plan by plan table is further down this page, and our LexisNexis pricing page covers every tier and term.
That makes the useful question less "does Lexis meter my searches" and more "what exactly sits outside my plan, and what does it cost when someone clicks it". The answer depends on two documents: your order form, which defines the plan, and the price schedule, which prices everything else.
Does LexisNexis charge per search?
Not for searches inside a subscription. LexisNexis sells Lexis+ as a flat-rate plan scoped to content: a jurisdiction, a set of practice areas, a tier of secondary sources. Within that scope you search as often as you like for the life of the contract. Both published schedules say it in the same sentence: the list prices "will not affect the price of your flat rate subscription but do apply to Materials used outside of your subscription."
Outside the plan, the meter is the document, not the query. The current schedule for Lexis, Lexis+ and Lexis+ AI prices "Online Content Document Access Charges" by category, so the charge lands when someone opens an out-of-plan document. The older Lexis Advance section of the same schedule did price searches directly, at anywhere from $0 to $469 depending on the source, with combined searches charged at the rate of every source selected. That legacy model is where the belief that Lexis charges per search comes from.
The published LexisNexis price list per search
These are the document access charges for Lexis, Lexis+ and Lexis+ AI from the LexisNexis Law Firm Per Search price schedule, effective December 5, 2023 and still posted on lexisnexis.com. The Large Legal schedule effective January 5, 2026 carries the same category rates.
| Content opened outside your plan | Charge per document |
|---|---|
| Primary law: cases, codes, statutes, court rules, agency materials, legislative history | $2 |
| News | $3 |
| Dockets | $7 |
| Ravel Law | $10 |
| Secondary materials, Tier 2: treatises, law reviews, jury instructions, verdicts and settlements, legal news | $53 |
| Practical Guidance: practice notes, templates, clauses, checklists | $95 |
| Secondary materials, Tier 1: CCH and select Matthew Bender titles such as Collier on Bankruptcy and Nimmer on Copyright | $95 |
| Premium litigation: briefs, pleadings, motions, expert witness analysis | $100 |
| 50 State Surveys | $221 |
| Netter medical illustrations | $289 |
| System Access Charge | $99 |
| Administration charge | $200 a month |
Two things jump out. First, out-of-plan primary law is cheap on Lexis: $2 to open a case you do not subscribe to, against the roughly $25 per case on the last Westlaw rate card we could find. The money is in secondary sources and practice tools, where one Practical Guidance note costs $95 and a 50 state survey $221. Second, the reports that sit on top of the research are priced separately: Litigation Profile Suite at $250 a report, Verdict and Settlement Analyzer at $125, and Context reports on judges, courts, experts and companies at $99 each (our expert witness search pricing comparison sets the expert reports against Westlaw Profiler and Daubert Tracker). If you pull verdicts often, a plan that includes them is cheaper, and our jury verdict research pricing comparison shows which Lexis+ tier carries them and what VerdictSearch costs on its own.
What does Shepard's cost per citation?
For Lexis, Lexis+ and Lexis+ AI, the schedule lists the Shepard's Citations Service at $0 per report, and Shepard's alerts carry no set-up or update fee. The older Lexis Advance section lists Shepard's at $7.75 per cite and Auto-Cite at $7.25 per cite, which is the figure you will still see quoted on forums. Brief Analysis is listed at $0, Agreement Analysis at $99.
That does not mean every Lexis+ plan includes Shepard's. On the LexisNexis law firm store, Shepard's is marked included for Essential, Enhanced and Professional, and not for Deluxe Transactional. Check the plan grid before you assume the citator is free.
What do Lexis+ AI and Protege requests cost outside your plan?
This is where the per-use numbers get large. The 2026 Large Legal schedule lists, under Lexis+ with Protege ("formerly Lexis+ AI"), $99 for a Generative AI Ask, $250 for a Summarize, $250 for a Drafting request, $12 for a Document Upload and Ask and $250 for a Document Upload and Summarize. The 2023 law firm schedule carries the same Lexis+ AI rates.
Ten out-of-plan AI questions a month would cost $990. The law firm store sells the assistant only as its own tier, Lexis+ with Protege, marked "Pricing on request" on the older store page and priced from 495 dollars per attorney per month on a three year term on a version LexisNexis began testing in October 2026, so a firm on one of the four priced tiers that starts using the assistant is on per-use pricing unless its contract says otherwise. We break down every published Lexis AI figure, and what Thomson Reuters charges for the same thing, in our LexisNexis AI pricing guide.
What is the 99 dollar LexisNexis System Access Charge?
It is a flat $99 charge that both schedules list as section 1.1, ahead of any document charge. LexisNexis does not describe the triggering activities on the price page itself; it says "A list of activities that trigger the System Access Charge is available in the Help Files." Ask your representative for that list in writing before you sign, because a $99 access charge on top of a $2 case turns a cheap out-of-plan lookup into a $101 one.
The Large Legal schedule adds a detail worth knowing if you bill research to clients. Primary law access and the AI request rates are marked "$0 in cost recovery data, unless requested otherwise", which means the cost recovery figures LexisNexis reports for client billing show those items at zero by default. If your firm passes research costs through to clients, decide your policy before the first report arrives.
How much does LexisNexis cost per month and per year?
The subscription is the main cost, and the per-search list only matters at the edges. On the LexisNexis law firm store, read on September 22, 2026, the four Lexis+ tiers for firms of one to three attorneys cost, per attorney per month:
| Lexis+ plan | 3 year term | 1 year term | Per year on 3 years |
|---|---|---|---|
| Essential | $114 | $152 | $1,368 |
| Deluxe Transactional | $217 | $289 | $2,604 |
| Enhanced | $257 | $342 | $3,084 |
| Professional | $324 | $432 | $3,888 |
The store labels the terms 2 years (10% off) and 3 years (25% off), and the promotional prices are for new customers only. Larger firms are sent to sales for a quote. The full answer to how much LexisNexis costs, tier by tier and including which features each plan carries, is on our LexisNexis pricing page, and the buying steps are in the LexisNexis subscription guide.
What does Nexis cost?
Nexis is the business news and company research side of LexisNexis, sold separately from Lexis+. The LexisNexis Nexis store lists one seat on a one year subscription at $342 a month for Nexis Essential, $935 for Nexis+ with Protege Essential and $1,130 for Nexis+ with Protege, billed monthly or upfront, with sales quoting teams of more than five. None of the three includes case law, so for legal research the comparison is with the Lexis+ plans in the table above. The LexisNexis subscription guide covers which Nexis tier fits a news and company profile workload.
How to keep out-of-plan charges off your LexisNexis invoice
Most surprise charges come from plan scope, not from heavy use. A litigator on Essential opens a federal case, a transactional lawyer clicks into a practice note, an associate asks the AI assistant a question the plan does not cover. Four habits prevent most of it:
- Get the plan scope in writing. Ask for the content list attached to your order form, including which Practical Guidance modules, secondary source tiers and AI request types are inside the flat rate.
- Match the jurisdiction to the work. Essential covers state caselaw only; federal cases start at Enhanced. If you litigate in federal court, the $143 a month gap between Essential and Enhanced on three years is cheaper than a stream of out-of-plan opens and access charges.
- Read the first two invoices line by line. Scope mistakes show up early. If the invoice arrives by email, an email parser that pulls invoice lines into a spreadsheet makes it easy to sort transactional charges by user and matter.
- Decide the AI question before anyone uses it. At $99 an answer, the assistant is either inside the contract or it is off.
Westlaw works the same way in outline but publishes far less. Our guide to whether Westlaw charges per search covers its out-of-plan rates and its own 99 dollar cost recovery figure.
The short version
LexisNexis does not charge per search inside a subscription. Outside it, LexisNexis publishes exactly what it charges: $2 for an out-of-plan case, $53 to $95 for secondary sources, $99 for system access, $200 a month in administration, and $99 to $250 for each AI request. The cheapest plan you can buy online is Lexis+ Essential at $114 per attorney per month on a three year term. If that is more than your research volume justifies, our list of LexisNexis alternatives compares what each one costs and what it leaves out.
If what you actually need most weeks is the controlling case on a specific question, and whether it is still good law, CaseSearch answers that directly. Ask in plain English and get the on-point decisions with citations, the holding in plain language and a good-law signal, for $49 a month month to month or $24 a month billed yearly, with no per-search charges, no out-of-plan tier and no multi-year term.
