The best paralegal AI is priced by the task it takes off a paralegal's desk, and the tasks cost very different amounts. Deposition and transcript summaries run 25 dollars a file on CaseMark. Drafting documents from intake forms starts at 83 dollars a month on Gavel. Cite checking a brief starts at 60 dollars a seat on BriefCatch. Case law research runs from 24 dollars a month on CaseSearch to more than 400 dollars for a Westlaw plan bundled with CoCounsel. A firm that buys by task usually spends a fraction of what an all-in-one platform quote asks for.

If you run a small firm, or you are the paralegal asked to pick the tools, the lists on page one of Google will not help much. They rank tools that do different jobs against each other and rarely say what any of them costs. Below, each task a paralegal does every week is matched to the tools that do it and the price each vendor publishes. Where a vendor publishes no price, we say so.

Prices are read from each vendor's pricing page in October 2026. Clio Work's 199 dollar figure is its October 2025 launch price as reported by LawSites; Clio's page now says "per-user pricing" without a number. Confirm before you buy.

What can AI do for a paralegal?

Most of a litigation or family law paralegal's week falls into five buckets: summarizing transcripts and records, drafting routine documents, organizing discovery, checking citations, and pulling the case law an attorney asked for. AI is now good at the first, second and fourth, useful on the third, and helpful on the fifth only if the tool shows you real, verifiable decisions.

The work does not go away. A summary still has to be checked against the transcript, a drafted pleading still needs the right caption and facts, and a research memo still needs every case read. What changes is the first draft, which arrives in minutes instead of an afternoon. That is the time a firm is paying for, and it is the right way to compare prices: what does one hour of paralegal time cost the firm, and how many hours a month does the tool save?

Best AI for deposition and transcript summaries

Summaries are the clearest win and the easiest to price. CaseMark charges 25 dollars per legal summary in page-line, narrative or analysis format, and 5 dollars an hour for audio or video transcription, with no monthly fee. A firm that summarizes four depositions a month spends 100 dollars. Its medical chronology pricing is capped at 100 dollars per record set of up to 25,000 pages, which matters to personal injury paralegals building treatment timelines.

Criminal defense paralegals face a different volume problem: hours of body camera footage, interrogation video and jail calls per case. Public defender offices license JusticeText for that, and we collected what counties actually pay in JusticeText pricing, alongside the cheaper transcription tools a small defense firm can buy by the month.

Pay-as-you-go pricing suits firms whose deposition volume rises and falls with trial dates. If your firm already pays for an all-in-one platform that includes summaries, check whether it caps the number of pages or files before you buy a second tool for the same job. For plaintiff firms comparing full records platforms, we price EvenUp, Supio and Eve in AI for personal injury lawyers.

Best AI for drafting documents from intake

Document automation is older than generative AI, and for routine paper it is still the better buy. Gavel turns your own templates into a client-facing intake form; the client or paralegal answers the questions once, and the tool fills the petition, agreement or letter. Lite costs 83 dollars a month with one builder seat and works with Clio Manage. Pro, at 290 dollars, adds organization seats, a legal template library and payment collection. There is a seven day trial with no card.

The output of a template is predictable, which is what you want for documents that go to a court clerk. Generative drafting tools are better at first drafts of letters and memos that need judgment. Many firms use both: automation for forms and pleadings, generative AI for correspondence.

Best AI for discovery documents and financial records

Discovery is where paralegals spend the most unpredictable hours, especially in family law and commercial cases where the other side produces years of bank and card statements as PDFs. Before anyone can trace a transfer or total a category of spending, those statements have to become rows in a spreadsheet. A paralegal can retype them, or convert PDF bank statements to Excel and spend the time on the analysis instead. For document review at scale, ediscovery platforms are a separate category with separate pricing, usually quoted per gigabyte.

For family law matters in particular, the financial work then feeds support and property calculations. We price the calculators, drafting tools and research options a divorce practice buys in our guide to family law AI.

Best AI for cite checking a brief

Cite checking used to mean a paralegal with a citator and a printout of the table of authorities. AI tools now flag bad citations, missing pin cites and formatting errors inside Word. BriefCatch costs 60 dollars per seat a month on its Individual plan and 75 dollars on Pro, both billed annually, with RealityCheck citation checking in every plan; we break down its credits and seat minimums in BriefCatch pricing. Clearbrief's Solo plan is 300 dollars per user a month and adds fact checking against the record. If the brief was researched in CaseSearch, our legal citation checker has already flagged the treatment of each case it returned.

With courts sanctioning filings that cite cases that do not exist, the cite check is no longer optional, and a paralegal is often the last person to read the brief before it is filed. We compare eight checkers, from free tools to full suites, in our AI citation checker guide.

Best AI for legal research by paralegals

Research is where firms overspend most, because the research platforms are sold to attorneys on multi-year terms and the paralegal seat comes on top. Westlaw Advantage with CoCounsel Essentials starts at 415.35 dollars a month in Thomson Reuters' own configurator; plain Westlaw Edge for one state starts at 107.25 dollars a month on a three year term. Lexis+ Essential starts at 114 dollars a month on a three year term. If you are weighing those, our Westlaw pricing breakdown lists every online plan.

A paralegal's research request is usually narrow: find the cases in this state that decided this question, and check that they are still good law. CaseSearch does exactly that. Type the question the way the attorney asked it, for example whether a Georgia court has enforced a non-compete signed after employment began, and you get the on-point decisions with citations, a plain-language holding and a good-law signal for each. It costs 49 dollars a month, or 24 a month billed yearly, with no sales call and no term, and you can run one question with no account using the tool on this page. It is a research tool, not legal advice, and the attorney still reads the cases.

How to choose AI tools for your paralegal team

  • List the tasks by hours. Ask each paralegal where last month's hours went. Buy for the top two tasks first.
  • Price the unit. Per summary, per seat, per page or per firm. Multiply by your real volume, not the vendor's example.
  • Check the term. Month to month and annual plans can be dropped; three year research contracts cannot.
  • Test on a closed file. Run a finished matter through the trial and compare the output with what your team produced.
  • Read the data terms. Confirm client files are not used to train the vendor's models, as ABA Formal Opinion 512 expects lawyers to understand.

Questions firms ask about paralegal AI

Will AI replace paralegals?

No. AI drafts summaries, documents and research lists faster, but every output still needs checking against the record and the law, and that review is paralegal work. Firms that adopt AI tend to move paralegals from typing and retyping to checking, organizing and client contact.

What is the best AI tool for paralegals?

It depends on the task. For transcript summaries, CaseMark at 25 dollars a file. For drafting from intake, Gavel from 83 dollars a month. For cite checking, BriefCatch from 60 dollars a seat. For case law research, CaseSearch at 24 to 49 dollars a month. Buy for your two most time-consuming tasks first.

Is there a paralegal tool to format a case summary with citations for the lead lawyer?

Yes. A case law research tool that summarizes each decision it returns does most of the formatting for you: the case name, full citation, court and year, then the facts, issue, holding and reasoning in plain language. CaseSearch's case summary generator does this for every result and adds a good-law signal, so the lead lawyer gets cited, verified leads in one hand-off.

How much do AI tools for paralegals cost?

From 25 dollars a file for pay-as-you-go summaries to more than 400 dollars a month for a research platform bundled with AI. A small firm can cover summaries, drafting and research for under 200 dollars a month by buying each task separately.

Can paralegals use ChatGPT for legal research?

Not on its own. General chatbots can invent cases that look real, which has led to court sanctions. Use a research tool that returns actual decisions with citations you can open, and have the supervising attorney read every case before it is relied on.
