LexisNexis AI Pricing With Lexis AI Cost, Lexis+ AI Pricing and the $99 to $250 LexisNexis Charges for Each AI Request

LexisNexis has started showing a subscription price for its AI assistant to some small firm buyers, and it also publishes what each AI request costs when it falls outside your plan. Both sets of numbers change how you should negotiate.

The short answer

LexisNexis now shows a subscription price for its legal AI to some buyers. On a version of its law firm store that LexisNexis began testing in October 2026, read on October 2, 2026, firms of one to three attorneys can buy Protege Assistant with Lexis Complete at $495 per attorney per month on a three year term, or $660 on one year, and Protege Firm Documents with Lexis Complete at $595, or $793 on one year. Other visitors still see Lexis+ with Protege (the product that replaced Lexis+ AI) as "Pricing on request", and firms of four or more attorneys request pricing. LexisNexis also publishes a per-use price list: its Large Legal price schedule, effective January 5, 2026, charges $99 for a Generative AI Ask, $250 for a Summarize or Drafting request, and $12 for a Document Upload and Ask when that use falls outside your subscription. On the Nexis business side, Protege adds $593 per seat per month.

The Large Legal schedule marks the AI rates and primary law access with "$0 in cost recovery data, unless requested otherwise", which concerns the figures LexisNexis reports for billing clients back, not what LexisNexis charges the firm. Your own contract controls which uses count as outside your plan. The $593 figure is our subtraction of two Nexis store prices. CaseSearch is a research tool, not legal advice.

How much does Lexis+ AI cost?

Lexis+ AI no longer exists as a product you can buy. LexisNexis replaced it in the United States with Lexis+ with Protege, which reached general availability on February 24, 2026, and its own 2026 price schedule labels the Protege AI charges "formerly Lexis+ AI". So the practical question is what Lexis+ with Protege costs. Since October 2026 LexisNexis has been testing a store version that answers it for firms of one to three attorneys: Protege Assistant with Lexis Complete at 495 dollars per attorney per month on a three year term, or 660 on one year, and Protege Firm Documents with Lexis Complete at 595, or 793 on one year. Visitors who get the older page still see the Protege row with "Pricing on request" and a Free Trial button, where the four research tiers show a price and a Subscribe Now button.

Those four tiers are what a firm of one to three attorneys can buy without a sales call: Essential at 114 dollars per attorney per month on a three year term, Deluxe Transactional at 217, Enhanced at 257 and Professional at 324. On a one year term they are 152, 289, 342 and 432. None of them includes the Protege assistant. Protege Assistant at 495 is 171 dollars a month above Professional on three years, and 228 above it on one year.

So the honest answer is that a Lexis AI subscription costs 495 dollars or more per attorney per month for a firm of one to three attorneys that sees the new store, and is a quote for everyone else. A quote can still be pinned down better than most buyers manage, because LexisNexis publishes two more numbers that bracket it: the per-use price of each AI request, and the monthly premium it charges for the same assistant on its Nexis business product.

Lexis+ AI

Retired name. Replaced by Lexis+ with Protege on February 24, 2026.

Lexis+ with Protege

$495 per attorney per month on 3 years for 1 to 3 attorneys on the new store version, Pricing on request on the older page and for 4 or more.

Cheapest Lexis+ you can buy online

$114 per attorney per month on 3 years, no AI assistant.

What does LexisNexis charge for each AI request?

LexisNexis publishes transactional list prices for everything on its platform, and since January 2026 the Large Legal schedule has a section for Lexis+ with Protege. A Generative AI Ask costs 99 dollars. A Generative AI Summarize costs 250 dollars, and so does a Generative AI Drafting request. Uploading a document and asking a question about it costs 12 dollars; uploading a document and asking for a summary costs 250. A prompt the assistant does not support costs nothing.

The older Law Firm Per Search schedule, effective December 5, 2023 and still posted, carries the same Lexis+ AI figures: 99 dollars an Ask, 250 dollars a Summarize, 250 dollars a Drafting request, 12 dollars a Document Upload and Ask. The rates have not moved in more than two years.

These prices apply to materials used outside your subscription. Both schedules say so in the same words: the list prices "will not affect the price of your flat rate subscription but do apply to Materials used outside of your subscription." If your contract includes Protege, a question you ask inside it is covered. If it does not, or if your plan scopes the assistant narrowly, each request is priced on this list.

Generative AI Ask

$99 per request.

Summarize or Drafting

$250 per request.

Document Upload and Ask

$12 per request.

Non-supported prompt

$0.

Is Protege included in a Lexis+ subscription?

Not in the four classic plans LexisNexis sells online. The store sells Protege as its own tier, Lexis+ with Protege, next to Essential, Enhanced, Professional and Deluxe Transactional, and on the older store page it is the only tier without a price. Buying Lexis+ Professional at 324 dollars a month does not give you the assistant; you would be moving to a different plan, priced at 495 dollars on the store version LexisNexis began testing in October 2026 and quoted otherwise.

That matters because the per-use list above is what applies when you reach for AI your plan does not cover. At 99 dollars an answer, ten AI questions a month outside the plan would cost 990 dollars, which is more than three months of Lexis+ Professional on a three year term. Before you sign any Lexis+ order form, get a written line that states whether Protege is included and which of the AI request types it covers.

Existing subscribers should ask the same question at renewal. Protege fully replaced Lexis+ AI, so if your current contract names Lexis+ AI, confirm in writing that the renewal keeps the assistant inside the flat rate rather than leaving it to transactional pricing.

How much does Protege cost per month?

For law firms of one to three attorneys, Protege Assistant with Lexis Complete is 495 dollars per attorney per month on a three year term, or 660 on one year, and Protege Firm Documents with Lexis Complete is 595, or 793, on the store version LexisNexis began testing in October 2026. The other monthly figure LexisNexis attaches to Protege is on its Nexis store, which sells business research rather than case law. Read on September 22, 2026, at one seat on a one year subscription length, Nexis Essential costs 342 dollars per seat per month, Nexis+ with Protege Essential costs 935 dollars and Nexis+ with Protege costs 1,130 dollars. The assistant therefore adds 593 dollars per seat per month on the Nexis side.

Nexis and Lexis+ sell different content to different buyers, so 593 dollars is an anchor rather than a law firm quote. It is still useful in a negotiation: it is what LexisNexis itself decided the assistant is worth on a product where it had to print a price.

Thomson Reuters prints its equivalent for law firms. Westlaw Advantage with CoCounsel Essentials costs 71.50 dollars a month more than Westlaw Advantage alone at all states and federal on a three year term, and 126.75 dollars at single circuit. Westlaw Edge with AI-Assisted Research costs 85.15 dollars a month more than plain Westlaw Edge at all states and federal on three years. Those are the numbers to bring to a Protege quote.

Nexis Essential

$342 per seat per month.

Nexis+ with Protege Essential

$935 per seat per month.

Protege premium on Nexis

$593 per seat per month.

Westlaw AI premium, for comparison

$71.50 to $126.75 a month (CoCounsel Essentials).

How do you avoid out-of-plan LexisNexis AI charges?

Start with the contract. Ask LexisNexis to list, by name, the AI request types your plan covers: Ask, Summarize, Drafting, Document Upload and Ask, Document Upload and Summarize. If a type is missing, it is priced per use. Ask also whether the 99 dollar System Access Charge applies to AI sessions; the schedule says the activities that trigger it are listed in the LexisNexis help files.

Then set up the platform. Ask your LexisNexis representative how the platform flags out-of-plan content and AI requests before they run, and make sure every user in the firm knows what that flag looks like. Check the monthly invoice for transactional lines in the first two billing cycles, because that is when mistakes in plan scope show up.

Finally, keep the monthly administration charge in mind. Both schedules list an administration charge of 200 dollars a month, and the Lexis Advance section of the 2023 schedule adds a subscription charge of 200 dollars a month. If you are being moved onto a pay-per-use arrangement, those fixed monthly lines come on top of every request.

System Access Charge

$99. Ask when it triggers.

Administration charge

Is LexisNexis AI worth it for a small firm?

It is worth pricing if you draft and summarize heavily and already live inside Lexis+. At 250 dollars per out-of-plan summary, a firm that summarizes a few documents a week is far better off with Protege inside the subscription than paying per request, and that price is 495 dollars or more per attorney per month on the new store version for firms of one to three attorneys, or a quote otherwise. The Stanford RegLab study measured Lexis+ AI, the predecessor, at 65 percent accuracy with a 17 percent hallucination rate, better than the Westlaw tool it tested. Nobody has independently measured Protege yet.

It is harder to justify when the job is narrower: finding the decisions that control a question and checking that they still stand. For that, an AI tier from 495 dollars per attorney per month on a multi-year contract is a lot of commitment, and a single out-of-plan answer at 99 dollars costs twice a month of a research tool with a published price.

CaseSearch answers that narrower question directly. You ask in plain English and get the on-point decisions with citations, the holding in plain language and a good-law signal, for 49 dollars a month month to month or 24 a month billed yearly, with no seat minimum and no per-question charges. It does not replace Shepard's, Lexis+ secondary sources or Protege drafting, and a firm built on Lexis should keep Lexis. For the everyday research question, it is a price you can see before you buy.

Buy Protege

You draft and summarize every week inside Lexis+.

Buy Lexis+ without AI

You need Shepard's and the library, not the assistant.

Avoid per-use AI

At $99 to $250 a request it outruns any subscription.

CaseSearch

$49 month to month or $24 billed yearly, cited decisions with a good-law signal.

Frequently asked

Questions buyers ask about lexisnexis ai pricing

How much is Lexis AI per month?

For firms of one to three attorneys, 495 dollars per attorney per month on a three year term or 660 on one year for Protege Assistant with Lexis Complete, on a store version LexisNexis began testing in October 2026, and 595 or 793 with Firm Documents. Some visitors still see "Pricing on request", and firms of four or more request pricing. The Lexis+ tiers without the assistant cost 114 to 324 dollars on a three year term.

What does LexisNexis charge per AI question?

Outside your subscription, 99 dollars for each Generative AI Ask, according to the LexisNexis Large Legal price schedule effective January 5, 2026. A Summarize or Drafting request costs 250 dollars, and a Document Upload and Ask costs 12 dollars. Inside a plan that includes Protege, questions are covered by the flat rate.

Is Lexis+ AI still available?

Not under that name. LexisNexis replaced Lexis+ AI with Lexis+ with Protege in the United States on February 24, 2026, and its 2026 price schedule lists the AI charges under Lexis+ with Protege, "formerly Lexis+ AI".

Does Lexis+ Essential include AI?

No. Lexis+ Essential, 114 dollars per attorney per month on a three year term or 152 on one year, is research and analytics with state caselaw. None of the four priced Lexis+ tiers on the law firm store includes the Protege assistant.

Is there a free trial of Lexis+ with Protege?

The older version of the law firm store, which some visitors still see, shows a Free Trial button on the Lexis+ with Protege row in place of a price. The trial goes through LexisNexis sales, so ask at the same time for the subscription quote and for a written list of which AI request types the plan covers.

Is LexisNexis AI cheaper than Westlaw AI?

It depends on the comparison. On the store version LexisNexis began testing in October 2026, Protege Assistant with Lexis Complete is 495 dollars per attorney per month on a three year term, 171 dollars above Lexis+ Professional, for firms of one to three attorneys. Thomson Reuters publishes smaller AI premiums: CoCounsel Essentials adds 71.50 to 126.75 dollars a month to Westlaw Advantage on a three year term, and AI-Assisted Research adds 85.15 dollars to Westlaw Edge at all states and federal. So the step up to AI costs more at Lexis than at Westlaw.

What is a cheaper alternative to LexisNexis AI for case law research?

For finding controlling decisions and checking they still stand, CaseSearch answers plain-English legal questions with cited decisions and a good-law signal for 49 dollars a month month to month or 24 billed yearly, with no per-question charges. Lexis+ Essential without AI starts at 114 dollars per attorney on a three year term.
